Step 1: Getting Your Drum Ready

But if you’re not getting one from a supplier like me, make sure you’re getting a drum that’s clean and in good condition. You don’t want any rust holes or weird chemicals lingering inside.
Once you’ve got your drum, give it a thorough cleaning. Remove any labels or stickers that are on it. You can use a scraper or some goo – gone to get rid of that sticky residue. This makes it easier to work on the drum and gives it a nice, clean look.
Next up, you’ll need to remove the top of the drum. Most 55 – gallon steel drums have a removable top. If yours does, great! Just use a drum key to pop that lid off. If it doesn’t, you might have to use a reciprocating saw or some other cutting tool. But be careful! Cutting through steel can be dangerous, so make sure you’re wearing safety goggles, gloves, and following all the proper safety procedures.
Step 2: Drilling Holes
Now that the top is off, we’re going to drill some holes. You’ll need a drill with a drill bit that’s suitable for steel. I usually recommend a 1 – inch drill bit for the inlet hole, which is where the rainwater will come in. You’ll want to drill this hole near the top of the drum, on one side.
Also, drill a few smaller holes, maybe 1/4 – inch, near the bottom of the drum. These holes are for drainage in case the barrel gets too full. You don’t want the water to overflow and cause a mess. And don’t forget to drill a hole for the spigot. The spigot is what you’ll use to get the water out of the barrel. Drill this hole about 6 inches from the bottom of the drum on another side.
Step 3: Installing the Inlet
After drilling the inlet hole, it’s time to install the inlet. You can buy an inlet kit at your local hardware store. The kit usually comes with a strainer and a funnel. First, place the strainer inside the drum, over the inlet hole. Then, push the funnel through the hole from the outside. Tighten the funnel on the strainer to create a seal. This setup helps to keep leaves, twigs, and other debris from getting into your rain barrel.
Step 4: Putting in the Spigot
Next, let’s work on the spigot. Get a spigot that’s designed for use with a rain barrel. Apply some plumber’s tape to the threads of the spigot to prevent leaks. Then, screw the spigot into the hole you drilled for it. Make sure it’s tight, but don’t over – tighten it or you might crack the steel.
Step 5: Painting and Protecting
The steel drum will eventually rust if you don’t protect it. You can paint the drum with a rust – resistant paint. I prefer to use a primer first to ensure good adhesion. Let the primer dry completely, and then apply one or two coats of the rust – resistant paint. This not only keeps the drum from rusting but also makes it look nice in your yard.
Step 6: Setting Up the Rain Barrel
Once everything is installed and the paint is dry, it’s time to set up your rain barrel. Find a level spot in your yard near a downspout. You can use cinder blocks or a stand to elevate the barrel a little bit. This makes it easier to get the water out using the spigot.
Connect the downspout from your roof to the inlet of the rain barrel. You might need to use some flexible tubing or connectors to make a good fit. Make sure the connection is secure so that water doesn’t leak out.
